Hoiho secure Millie Simpson signature for 2023

The Southern Hoiho are happy to announce the signing of Millie Simpson for the 2023 Tauihi League season.

Originally from Auckland, Simpson came to Dunedin to study medicine, ready to experience somewhere new.

Simpson debuted for the Otago Gold Rush in 2020 and has also played for the South Pac Magic in the Dunedin Women’s Club Comp.

Winning the MVP in the Dunedin Women’s Club Comp in 2021, Simpson was on the verge of joining the Southern Hoiho in 2022 before an injury sidelined her for the duration last season.

A year on and back on court, Simpson is excited to play her first season in the Tauihi League for the Southern Hoiho.

“I’m so excited to be coming back off of that, because it's been a while since I've played for Otago,” she said.

Simpson said it was an easy choice to sign with the Southern Hoiho.

“I’ve gotten to know the community down here over the past couple of years, and they're just such an awesome group of girls with really good energy,” she said.

“We do stuff together off the court. And then on the court. We're always working out for each other. I'm happy to play next to them and work hard for them. It's just such a cool group of people to be around.”

The professionalism of the league is something Simpson said she is looking forward to being a part of.

“The professionalism excites me a lot as well, I think to play against some pretty top-level players will be really good to push me and like push us to develop and challenge the game,” she said.

“And then you're also playing alongside some talented players, and hopefully learning from them.”

On the goals for the season, Simpson said team culture was a priority.

“We’re going out there and giving it our best shot, enjoy ourselves and play some good basketball.”

The Southern Hoiho’s first game of the season comes against the Tokomanawa Queens on the July 12, get your tickets now.
