Harris commits to Hoiho for 2023

The Southern Hoiho are stoked to announce the signing of Abby Harris for the 2023 Tauihi League season.

Harris is coming off her debut season for the Otago Gold Rush in the D-League.

Playing basketball since she was in primary school, Harris has plenty of experience playing at club level and representing Otago at nationals from under-13s to under-19s.

Now finished high school, Harris is in her first year of university studying to become a teacher.

Growing up in Dunedin, Harris followed the Otago Gold Rush growing up and being a part of professional basketball in her hometown has always been on her mind.

“I’m from Dunedin so it’s definitely something I’ve always looked forward to, coming up through age group basketball I always thought that I’d want to be a part of it,” she said.

“I trained with the gold rush a few times, so it was always something on my mind.”

Preparing to play her first season of professional basketball, Harris is looking forward to the professionalism of the league.

“I think I’m just really excited to be involved in a professional environment,” she said.

“It’s a massive step up from school sport and club basketball.”

Harris said she was excited to play alongside and learn from experienced players and coaches.

“Playing alongside experienced and more knowledgeable players, I’ll learn a lot off of them and especially the imports as well coming from a different type of basketball in America and Australia,” she said.

“I’m looking forward to learning off them and the different coaches as well.”

On her own goals for the season, Harris is looking to grow as a player.

“Growth in my own game, learning off everyone else and developing my skills and getting a bit stronger,” she said.

The Southern Hoiho’s first game of the season comes against the Tokomanawa Queens on the July 12, get your tickets now.
