Caitlin O’Connell signs with Southern Hoiho for 2023

The Southern Hoiho are delighted to announce the signing of point guard Caitlin O’Connell for the 2023 Tauihi league season.

Reigning from Taranaki, New Plymouth, O’Connell has been playing basketball at a high level since beginning the sport in primary school.

O’Connell was named in the junior Tall Ferns squad in 2020 a career highlight for her, despite covid preventing the tournament from going ahead.

Coming to Dunedin to study Physiotherapy, O’Connell has represented the Otago region in basketball on multiple occasions including a stint with the Otago Gold Rush in 2021.

O’Connell said she is excited to represent the Southern region.

“Obviously it’s an amazing opportunity and a huge honour to be able to represent the southern region,” she said.

“I’m really excited to play with and against the best players in the country.”

O’Connell is looking forward to hitting the court with her new teammates.

“We’ve been training a lot and I’ve really enjoyed learning heaps from the experienced players like Sammy and Zoe,” she said.

“I’m trying to soak in as much as I can and enjoy myself.”

“I think we’ve got a really good group.”

“It’s a great bunch of girls and I’m really looking forward to be able to play with them and be amongst the Tauihi league.”

The Southern Hoiho’s first game of the season comes against the Tokomanawa Queens on the July 12, get your tickets now.
