Hoiho secure signature of Dunedin local Britt Richards

The Southern Hoiho are happy to announce the signing of shooting guard/small forward Britt Richards for the 2023 Tauihi league season.

Born and raised in Dunedin, and the twin sister of Hoiho forward Zoe Richards, Britt Richards is a familiar face to basketball in Otago and the southern region.

Richard’s pro-basketball journey started in Wyoming where she was offered a scholarship to play and spent her junior year at Gillette College straight out of high school.

After a season with Gillette, Richards transferred to University of Alaska Fairbanks where she spent the next three years completing her degree and playing basketball.

Richards returned to New Zealand in 2020, joining the Canterbury Wildcats in the NZNBL Women’s competition where she played in 2021 while completing her masters in Sports Recreation & Management at Lincoln University.

Back in Dunedin and after a season with the Otago Gold Rush in the D-League, Richards is ready to represent the Otago region in the Tauihi league.

“I feel fortunate to be able to represent my region,” she said.

“Dunedin is my hometown, so it's a huge honour.”

“I can remember when I was a kid watching the Gold Rush, I always dreamed of doing that and I looked up to those girls, so it's pretty cool to now be one of those girls now playing.”

Richards is excited to play with twin sister Zoe Richards for the first time since 2020.

“I'm super excited to play with my sister again,” she said.

“We’ve competed against each other for quite a while, since we split to different colleges, so I'm really looking forward to being reconnected with her and play with her again.”

In what will be her first season playing in the Tauihi League, Richards is looking forward to it.

“This season is going to be really awesome, it’s an exciting opportunity,” she said.

“It's awesome to have a good local group of coaches, and we’ve got a great group of players.”

“The growth of the league right now is awesome and how they're making it more professional.”

“It's really awesome to be a part of something that's got so much potential in the future.”

The Southern Hoiho’s first game of the season comes against the Tokomanawa Queens on the July 12, get your tickets now.
